MECHANIMALS Playing Cards is an exclusive and striking deck meticulously crafted as an exercise in developing my artistic language. It's my first really personal project.
It was created using a mixed-media technique that combines collages of old 19th-century prints recovered from flea markets with ink and digital color, in a meticulous and detailed process similar to that of a goldsmith. My main goal was to create a beautiful piece, yet deeply rooted in the culture and history of playing cards. Mechanimals is the result of deep research into the legacy and history of European playing cards. Focusing on the preferences of collectors around the world, the figures of the deck represent historical iconography based on real or legendary characters. For this reason, I was selected among some of the world's best designers as Artist of the Year at the 7th Annual Diamond Awards, organized by the 52 Plus Joker Collectors Association.
This project was 200% funded by backers around the world through Kickstarter.
I decided to use a combination of a 2d image with 3d renderings of the tuck case to show the product and give the project greater consistency with the style and images of the deck itself, and to distinguish it from most projects that are funded on Kickstarter.
In addition to the beautiful card designs that you can see in more detail on the campaign website, the project has two main editions, Limited and Deluxe.
Two editions with similar features: Fully custom and original artwork made using a unique collage technique, Embossed tuck box, Inner printing on tuck and a secret image inside the tuck box. But the deluxe gilded edition is available for those wanting the ultimate in luxury, which comes with blue gilded edges, and a special die cut sleeve for the tuck.
If you enjoy the art of image and storytelling and you love card games like I do, I invite you to get one of the latest limited edition decks. You can get it here:
